Hello Environmental Educators!
We hope you all had a wonderful break and are ready to tackle the rest of the academic year! 2024’s application window opens on 1st May and closes on 31st July, so there is still plenty of time to deliver environmental projects and empower young people this academic year! With that in mind, this newsletter is packed with last-minute eco-ideas and advice for submitting a successful application and achieving your Green Flag goal – our team can’t wait to learn more about the wonderful environmental activities you’ve delivered this year!

Looking for Last Minute Project Ideas?
If you’re on the lookout for some last minute inspiration to get your Eco-Schools’ Green Flag Application over the line, check out our 50 Eco-Projects resource by logging into your Eco-Schools’ account and heading to Step 3: Action Plan. With over 50 projects, each rated by cost and difficulty, this resource is perfect if you’re on the lookout for some Summer Term eco-ideas.
We Will Plant One Tree for Every Green Flag Awarded!
As a thank you from us, we’re delighted to announce that this year, we will once again be working with JUST ONE Tree to plant one tree for every Green Flag raised. You can learn more about JUST ONE Tree below and a tree planting certificate will be available to download in this year’s digital award pack.
Healthy Summer Toolkit
To celebrate World Earth Day 2024, we will be launching our latest initiative the Healthy Summer Toolkit on April 22nd. This toolkit has been created with support from Bupa Foundation and it is designed to spotlight the connection between physical, mental, and environmental health. The kit will help your pupils get active, inspire others, and spark conversations this summer. Keep an eye on your e-mails next week for its launch.
And Finally,
- Duracell’s Big Battery Hunt is back for 2024. Take part in this exciting national battery recycling programme and help your school achieve an Eco-Schools’ Green Flag Award. Check out the Big Battery Hunt’s free resources and the chance to win amazing prizes. Register today for a fun and easy way to teach the topic of sustainability.
- There is still time to apply for one of Learning Through Landscapes Local School Nature Grants. These grants can provide up to £500 worth of outdoor equipment and staff training and applications are open until Friday 26th April.
- Applications for Woodland Trust’s Free Trees for Schools are still open for delivery in November 2024 – like the Woodland Trust, Eco-Schools believes that every young person should have the opportunity to plant a tree!
- Hedgehog Awareness Week begins on 5th May, the British Hedgehog Preservation Society have lots of advice on making areas more welcoming to our spikey friends.
- Living Streets Walk to School Week kicks off on 20th May, you can find out more on their website and order their Magic of Walking classroom packs now!
- The Zayed Sustainability Prize awards six high schools from around the world with $150,000 to transform their sustainability visions into reality. If your Eco-Committee have an epic plan they want to make a reality, they can submit an entry until 23rd June!
