How do I check if my school is already registered?

You can check if your school is registered via the online schools search facility or by contacting the Eco-Schools team.

Is there a cost to register my school?

There is no cost to register your school, there is only a charge for the Eco-Schools Green Flag assessment visit.

What do I do if I have forgotten my log-in details?

Contact the Eco-Schools team with your school name and postcode so we can confirm your log-in details.

How do I change the contact details for my school?

Schools can login to their page and update their details, alternatively please contact us with the changes (please provide the school name and postcode).

How do I find schools that are registered with Eco-Schools?

To find other schools that are registered with the Eco-Schools programme please use our online schools search facility.

Can I use the Eco-Schools logo?

Schools can only use the Eco-Schools logo once they have achieved the Eco-Schools Green Flag. To obtain a copy of the logo please contact us, providing your school name and postcode. If would like to feature the Eco-Schools logo in a magazine article or on a web page, then please contact us with the request and the text you intend to use.

What is the cost of the assessment visit and what does it cover?

The charge for a Green Flag assessment by Eco-Schools England is £200 + VAT every two years. The charge covers the administration and official award materials for the Eco-Schools programme, assessor training and the ongoing development of the programme.

How often do I need to apply for the Eco-Schools Green Flag?

The Green Flag needs to be renewed every two years. The application process is the same for renewing your Green Flag as it is for applying for your first flag. If you are unsure of your renewal date please contact the Eco-Schools team with your school name and postcode.

When will my school have to pay Eco-Schools for the assessment and award?

Your school is eligible for the payment when you have submitted an application. The invoice will be sent following the assessment visit, on receipt of payment the award pack, including your flag and certificate, will be sent. You will have 30 days to pay the invoice.

Will I be charged if the school is unsuccessful in achieving the Eco-Schools Green Flag?

If your school does not meet the criteria upon desk assessment you will be given the opportunity to submit further evidence. If you are unsuccessful following a visit by an assessor, you will be given the opportunity, with support from the Eco-Schools team, to be reassessed within six months of the original assessment visit. You will not incur another charge for the reassessment.

If upon this reassessment it is felt that you should apply at a later date with a ‘first time’ application, your school at that point will be eligible for the full charge.

What if my original application is rolled back and I need to do more work?

If your school does not meet the criteria upon desk assessment and is ‘rolled back’ you will be given the opportunity to submit further evidence to the team before a date is arranged for an assessor to visit you.

How can my school pay the charge?

An invoice will be sent to the school following the assessment visit. Upon receipt of the invoice the school will be given 30 days to process the payment and send to Eco-Schools. On receipt of payment, the letter, flag and certificate will be sent to the school. You will be able to pay by cheque to Keep Britain Tidy or by BACS.

What type of schools can join Eco-Schools?

Any type of school can join Eco-Schools. This includes nurseries, primary schools, secondary schools, colleges, special schools and pupil referral units. If you are unsure whether you are eligible to join the Eco-Schools programme please get in touch

How long will the assessment visit last and what does it involve?

The assessment will last approximately 90 minutes. The assessors will want to have a tour of the school and speak to members of the Eco-Committee, as well as staff.

What does a school receive when they have achieved an award?

Bronze and Silver awarded schools receive a certificate, which can be downloaded from the Eco-Schools website. Schools awarded an Eco-Schools Green Flag receive a letter, certificate and flag.

What is the size of the Green Flag?

The Green Flag measures 100cm by 150cm and comes with care instructions. The diameter of the Eco-Schools logo is 75cm.

Does the school need planning permission to fly the flag?

Flying your flag no longer requires planning permission. Following the 2012 Olympics the rules on flying certain types of flag were relaxed and Eco-Schools flags now have ‘deemed consent’. Does a school have to go through each award stage?

Schools can choose to go through each award stage (Bronze, Silver and Green Flag) but this is not compulsory. A school may obtain their Bronze award and then decide to work towards Green Flag straight away. Alternatively, a school could go straight to Green Flag from registration, depending on the level of work that has been completed.
